About the Position:
We are seeking a dynamic Director with advanced flow cytometry and cell sorting experience to lead and direct?the?Flow Cytometry and Cell Sorting Shared Resource.
? Our word-class flow cytometry and cell sorting facility is staffed by 10 experienced full-time employees who operate 7 cell sorters and 7 flow analyzers including BD Biosciences Aria, Fusion, LSRFortessa, Symphony A3, A5, A5-SE instruments as well as Cytek Aurora and ThermoFisher BigFoot instruments.
You will lead this team of flow cytometry specialists in support of research for over 100 research laboratories at St.
Jude Children's Research Hospital with a clear vision to fulfill our mission.
You will work with staff to create clearly defined roles that inspire engaged employees and allow career advancement for staff.
You will maintain extensive and up-to-date knowledge of flow cytometry and cell sorting technologies and emerging applications to maintain a cutting-edge research facility.
In this role, you will employ and maintain effective communication with investigators, Flow Shared Resource staff, and other personnel involved in Flow Shared Resource projects and activities.
You will implement systems to routinely assess quality, consistency, and opportunities for innovation.
You will advise and interact with faculty and other research staff on the management, design, technical needs and execution of projects served by the Flow Shared Resource.
You will oversee operations and quality of the services provided by the shared resource and develop annual budgets and recommendations for future capital acquisitions and expansion.
The Flow Shared Resource provides a large diversity of services including standard and highly complex flow analysis, conventional and spectral cell sorting, a wide variety of sample preparation approaches, analysis and interpretation of complex data, training of the broader staff community in analyzer operation and flow basics, sorter operation and sorting basics, and maintenance of a self-service analysis lab.

Manages day-to-day activities of Flow Shared Resource and its staff.
Maintains high level of proficiency in current and evolving technologies relevant to Flow Shared Resource goals, including Spectral Flow techniques and analysis.
Keeps up to date with emerging technology applicable to the Flow Shared Resource and ensures it is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment.
Oversees new equipment testing, demonstration, and acquisition.
Analyzes workflow and determines, recommends, and oversees the implementation of methods to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of operations.

Supervises laboratory staff.
Ensures that all Flow Shared Resource employees are knowledgeable in current technologies and skills.
Obtains feedback on and evaluates performance of Flow Shared Resource employees.
Counsels and disciplines employees.
Seeks advice/consent of supervisor as needed.
Interviews and makes decisions when hiring new employees.
Conducts and promotes staff continuing education and development through attending and presenting seminars and training sessions, reading articles, and managing special projects.

Supervises performance of laboratory activities.
Advises and interacts with faculty and other research staff on the management, design, and technical needs of projects serviced by the Flow Shared Resource.
Ensures accuracy, reproducibility, and timeliness of results.
Reviews problems in reagent and instrument quality control.
Serves as a resource for troubleshooting laboratory problems.
Reviews and ensures cost recovery through chargebacks in compliance with established institutional guidelines.
Responsibly manages capital resources and will prepare reports in collaboration with the Associate Director of the Shared Resources for the Cancer Center.
Monitors quality control (QC), quality assurance (QA), and quality management (QM) of activities and resolves any deficiencies.

Performs other related duties as assigned to meet the goals and objectives of the department and institution.

Attends department/ institute-specific program meetings and retreats to ensure members are well informed about services offered and learn the needs of members across the institution.
